Tarmac Laying Contractors in Hinxton — what to expect

For homeowners across Hinxton, the quiet village just off the A1301, arranging a tarmac driveway, path, or private road surface is usually a matter of practical choice rather than show, and local contractors know exactly how to handle the area’s clay-heavy soil and seasonal water run-off. A typical job in the CB10 district begins with excavating the existing ground, then laying and compacting a MOT Type 1 sub-base to a depth that will actually hold a car in winter, followed by a tack coat to bond the layers before an AC 20 binder course is spread and rolled with a steady hand. The finishing AC 10 surface course is then compacted by a plate or roller, giving that smooth, dark finish that sheds puddles rather than pooling them, with edge restraint kerbs set in concrete to stop the edges crumbling over time. For older drives in Hinxton that have sunk or cracked, a plane and overlay is often the smarter fix, saving the hassle of digging out the entire base, while tar and chip remains a cost-effective option for longer farm tracks and shared access roads. Dropped kerbs are a separate matter, handled by the county highways team for Cambridgeshire, but many surfacing firms will manage the paperwork and excavation on your behalf, and they will also advise on driveway drainage to keep surface water away from your property’s foundations. It is worth gathering a few local quotes from tarmac laying contractors who cover Hinxton and the surrounding villages, just to compare methods and sub-base depths before you commit.
